A day in the life of an ACA trainee

I am an ACA trainee within the Agriculture and Property team. I joined Ellacotts in 2012 and have been supported from day one with all of my training needs to reach my goal of being a chartered accountant.

No two days are the same in the Agriculture and Property team, which means I am exposed to a variety of different tasks such as; Accounts preparation and Tax returns for Partnerships, Sole Traders, Companies, LLP and Trusts, VAT Returns and Bookkeeping training for our clients.

I also spend time supporting my peers through the Ellacotts trainee accountant programme, which is based on a trainee/mentor structure that enables me to utilise – and pass on – the knowledge and skills I have gained over the past 5 years.

Prioritising my work and time management is key to my day, as it helps me to ensure I achieve client expectations. However, it does not always go to plan and therefore I need to be adaptable to meet the demands of that specific day.

The majority of the work I carry out is office based but I have had the opportunity to meet a number of clients through the agricultural shows and events we attend and the bookkeeping training I have been able to offer.

One of the most rewarding parts of my job is the strong relationships I have built with our farming clients and proving that they are more capable than what they think they are.

After a busy day in the office, if I am not studying, I like to unwind with a Pilates class or a cold G&T.
