A day in the life of a Qualified Accounts Senior

I am a Qualified Accounts Senior in the Agriculture and Property department and I have been at Ellacotts since March 2016.

My typical day looks like this…

I usually start work with a big cup of tea and then I start preparing tax returns for our farming clients. I usually manage to prepare two or three during the day depending on how complex they are.

Since starting at Ellacotts my role has changed. I was originally trained in preparing accounts, however, I have been able to move over to working on tax projects and tax returns. I usually work on more complex tax returns and these generally involve Farmers Averaging and Capital Gains Tax computations. Within my role, I am also involved in special projects such as Inheritance Tax reports and an Expert Witness report for a court case. I still prepare accounts but only on an ad-hoc basis.

I get to speak to a variety of agri clients when preparing tax returns and accounts and, even though I am mainly office based, I do sometimes get to meet clients face-to-face.

I also attend any marketing and business events that Ellacotts holds or attends. Most recently, I attended the Cereals event in Lincolnshire, where Ellacotts had a stand. Cereals is a national agricultural show for cereal farmers and it was great to meet some of our clients and contacts there.

The most rewarding part of my job is when I manage to complete a complicated tax return and hopefully save someone some tax!

After a busy day at work, I usually end up pottering about the farm finding something to do or meeting up with friends for dinner.
